World Statistics Day
Official statistics are playing an increasing role in our societies and governments. High quality statistical data are now readily available at the national, regional and global levels. They routinely used in public debate policy, formulation and business decision. National statistical system that been charged with charged with the compilation and the dissemination of official statistics have evolved to become an important national institution in each and every country. The commitments to the production of high quality official statistics are manifested in many ways, be it through population census-taking, households or enterprises surveys, or administrative data system integration: through gross domestic products calculation and estimation, prices or Millennium Development Goals measurement; or through birth and death statistics. The national statistical system has now proved ton be an indispensable national institution.
About 80 of the countries celebrate a Statistics Day annually, some countries observe either a week-tong event, or celebrate a Statistics Day every five years or did so as a one-time occasion.
World Statistics Day celebrating initiated by Statistical Division UN, and planned as a one-off event, would add a global component to the thus far national and regional celebrations.
The Statistics Division, in September 2008, requested countries and regional and international agencies to send their views on the proposal of observing World Statistics Day on 20 October 2010 (20-10-2010). The outcome of the consultation was overwhelming support for the initiative, which was reported to the Statistical Commission at its fortieth session in February 2009.
The general theme of celebrating the Many Achievements of Official Statistics and the core values of service, integrity and professionalism.
World Statistics Day will aim to raise awareness of the many contributions of official statistics premised on the core values of service, integrity and professionalism. It will address a broad audience, ranging from decision makers and data providers to the generally very heterogeneous data-use, community, al the national, the regional and the global levels.
